Ellie goes into the machine, takes off, and everything is successful so far. Then, she begins to pick up very strong vibrations, which she does not know how to respond to. At the operation ship, know one receives the messages Ellie is sending back because the magnectic force has broken off the connection for good. Ellie is stillin shock trying to contact the operation ship because she too is getting no response back. She stays on the chair at the machine and still is rushing to try to recieve a signal, and suddenly the chair breaks off. As she is still on the chair, she too is sucked to the top with the chair, and is strongly hurt and passes out.
The base has no clue what has happened, since the connection has been cut off. They then try to find the remains of the machine, which they eventually attain. Along with that, they also find Ellie's body.
REASONS:
1. At the time, it's really hard to say if the technology can actually take us into space. So a second failure is realistic.
2. Ending at the part where Ellie passes out creates tension and makes the audience want to know more.
3. The ending still leaves more to the imagination, because the audience still doesn't know for sure if something is out there in space.
4. Gives us a closed ending, and allows us to know how Ellie has dies, does not leave lose strands hanging.
5. The ending projects the moral of no matter how hard you try, sometimes things just don't turn out the way you want it to be. A good alternative to a happy ending.
